“Then there is the
last group, the NAS, non academic students. Their primary objective is fun and
fun ever, twenty four hours, non-stop. They are very good in extra-curricular
activities such as game, or simply as fanatical fans, particularly where there
is fighting to be done. Also during students’ union elections, they become king
makers and thugs.
Surprisingly, most
cult members do not belong to this group rather they utilize them as soldiers’,
guard and hit men. Many of them have stayed in campus for more than five years ‘reading’
the same first or second year course.
They usually drop out
after second semester, year one, after year one result is published and they have
failed, resulting in with draw. But they keep collecting school fees from their
parents and guardians in the guise that they are still in school. They keep
associating with their former classmates until those ones graduate successfully
while they themselves remain behind escorting babies whom they live with to the
door of the lecture hall and returning outside the gate to wait for their babes
to finish lectures.
Look at them there:
Billy, Stevo, Geroge Best, Paddy O, the main original O.O man, Kola, Udo and
Ekene. Look at their babes: Kate, Chidinma, Ify and Doris. Right from the first
year, every student chooses which God to serve of if you like which group to
join”.
“Sis Lizzy, to which
group do you belong?” Sandra asked.
“Academic with fun,
not tears”. Lizzy said. “What about you babies?” “Academic with fun, not tears”. Sandra
and Harmony chorused.
It was midway into
the first semester. Another period of excitement had come, the matriculation of
first year student. It was a week of festivities commencing with rag day and
then the matriculation. It is a day in which the first years are officially and
publicly declared bonafide students and undergraduates of the institution. All
first year students look up to the event with pleasurable enthusiasm.
“Where will you babe
rag?” Doris asked “Lag now, or PH”. “Ah you dummies. Lag is
not much fun. What will you do there? You both don’t need the money; it’s fun
you need!”
“Yes Doris, you are
right but where is the fun here now?”
“Ok Sandra, you know
your friend Sussy, her friend Cynthia is giving a big bash on matric eve for
some first year senior babes. If I ask her she will invite you”
“What about Doris?”
Harmony asked
“I will be there, but
as mother of the night, if you like I can call Sussy now”.
“Hello Sussy baby,
this is Doris, Mother of the Night. Why didn’t you invite my friends to the BS
night eh? Oh, you thought they would travel, well they won’t Ok?”
Friday night approached
and Sandra was filled with excitement; so was her friend Harmony. They chose
their best wears: clothes, shoes and trinkets.
Watching them Lizzy
smiled and remembered her own excitement during her first year. But she advised
them.
“Sandra, I know you
Harmony are going for a party. I don’t know you Harmony are going for a party
and I don’t want to spoil your fun but please don’t stay beyond 10:30pm”.
“Why?”
“Because matric eve
is usually a time of tension on campus; It is a time rival group try to show
their influence and clashes resulting in serious injuries, even death often
occurs. Moreover such clashes often begin at parties when booze has flowed too
much. Please come home as soon as you notice strange movements”.
Sandra and Harmony
promised and went off to the party at the new building close to the new
construction sites.
Sussy was busy at the
gate when Sandra and her friend arrived.
“Ah Sandy babe,
Harmony, you look gorgeous; you are welcome. Make yourselves comfortable
inside, the party has already started”.
The music was booming
and many guys and babes were swinging it on the floor. Sandra looked around and
recognized many faces; she saw Dizzy Kate, Chummy, Ify and Doris digging it
with Paddy O, George Best, Steveo, Udo and Ekene. She nudged Harmony and whispered:
“This place is filled
with NAS. Yes o, even Brethren guys and BS babes! We must be careful. Look at
the short guy over guy there. His name Santos. I hear he is the Capone of the
Brethren. Sandra I don’t like it o, let’s go home”.
“What, we have just
arrived let’s have patience and wait, nothing de happen”.
“Ok, but look at the
time, it is already 10pm”
The music was good,
so was the DJ. He moved from Makossa, to Africa China, to Lagbaja, to Femi Kuti
and then Harmony enjoyed it all. They danced with great abandon forgetting the
night and its dangers. The group dancing competition for babies was on. Sandra and
Harmony were paired contesting against Dizzy K and Chummy”.
These new girls are
really good. Cynthia thought. They are out classing Dizzy and Chummy who have
won the competition for three consecutive years.
To be continued
tomorrow
