Music Review “FANS MI” By Singer Davido Featuring Rapper Meek Mill

Yah! Today, I’m going to review the latest music video by pop singer David Adeleke popularly called Davido, featuring global rapper/star Meek Mill. The song is currently rocking the airwaves and it’s not showing any signs of abating. The popularity of the singers especially Meek Mill contributed in accenting the song, and making it a charming piece of music.

When the song was first released in an audio CD, the receptiveness it enjoyed among Nigerian music lovers was awesome. Little wonder, the hullabaloo as the music video was premiered. The sound effects, background and video quality are worth trekking for; in fact, it’s a very big kudos to the music crew; the producer and his team remarkably did a great job and the singer Davido and international rapper Meek did not spare any idea in making it awesome and enthralling. The song may have no doubt earned Davido some local and international accolades.
However, the music video is everything but didactic. I don’t mean to be accosting, but, it wouldn’t be out of place to suggest that the song is a negation of our African ideals and culture. Little wonder, a writer Tofarati Ige, once advised parents not to allow their children under the age of 18 to see the raunchy video.
The ‘Gobe’ crooner, tried successfully to reduce the song to nothing more than a show of scantily-dressed ladies shaking their butts, and if I may add the glorification of drunknesses, business ‘fraud’, and other forms of moral vices. He really pushed the boundaries of decency and morality in the song “Fans Mi”. That was indeed, his Achilles’ heel.
Let’s start from the first view; it was indeed a superlative display of creative art by the music producer no doubt. The introduction of popular American rapper Meek Mill nailed it. His contribution was great and even more.

However, the song started with a flamboyant display of cash, yah, and real hard currency on the table for crying out loud, which no doubt assailed our eyes. Worst still, the several types of guns succeeded in embarrassing our sensibility....

The boundary of morality was finally pushed to the extreme, when our eyes were again assailed by the sights of semi-nude damsels shaking their butt in an unapologetic manner. As if the sight of raunchily dressed damsel was not enough, the story line killed it. What a story-line?
Let me attempt an analysis of what transpired. Davido in the song allegedly tries to seal a deal with a drug dealer to supply products which some persons alleged to be ‘cocaine’. The ‘Maga’, actually gave him some dollars for the supply which never materialized. It was observed that Davido then goes back to his mansion where he was spotted preparing the goods with some nearly naked girls dancing raunchily in almost every scene of the video.
The story-line of the video gave people the biggest shock of their lives, when Davido aided by the brassieres and panties flaunting ladies delivered the product after preparing it and it was discovered that a local food, ‘Semovita’ was delivered to the dealer instead of the supposed cocaine. This no doubt, pissed off the drug dealer as he was seen languishing in frustrations.
At this point, one began to question the rationale behind such an arrogant display of insanity. What exactly was the pop singer trying to tell his fans? I want to believe our assumptions are wrong, if not, then Daviod’s latest music video should not be accommodated beyond the limit of indecency. Davido’s fans, made of gullibly youths might be deceived into believing that such deceptive orientation is a sure way of amassing wealth. Does it mean that it is morally right to be involved in an illicit business to be successful in life? Can we also comfortably say that guns are now toys to play with by all and sundry? What about the brassier and panties flaunting damsels that embarrassed our sense of decency throughout the video? When has it become a norm to feature naked and semi- naked females in every music video? Can’t we have well and decently dressed ladies in our Nigerian music video again?
Even though, the song “Fans Mi” may have some cool messages to pass, the arrogant showing off of private parts and other obscuring scenes failed to send a good message to the members of the public.  Little wonder, it was reported recently that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has frowned at the song.
