Sometime ago, the story of Meriam Ibrahim, the
Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death for apostasy dominated the social
media and even attracted international attention.
Fast forward to today, the woman flew into Italy
in the early hours of the day with her husband Daniel Wani and their two
children Martin and Maya, where they met with Pope Francis at Casa
Santa Martath inside the
Vatican. A statement by Vatican spokesman Fr. Lombardi, explained that Meriam and her family met with the Catholic pontiff in a 'very serene & affectionate' environment, and Pope Francis thanked Meriam for her 'courageous witness to perseverance in the Faith.'
According to Fr. Lombardi, Meriam also thanked the Pope for his fervent prayers for her and her household which she said enabled her to courageously passed through her ordeal.
