INTERESTING!!! Signs You May Be Obese

Obesity…
A very interesting article I culled today from Pharm-Guide
Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.
For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using their weight and height to calculate the “Body Mass Index” or BMI. For most people, BMI is a good indicator of their amount of body fat....

BMI = weight (kg)/height (m2)
• You are in the normal range if your BMI is between 18.5 and 25 (kg/m2).
• You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 30.
• You are obese if your BMI is ≥ 30.
• You are morbidly obese if your BMI is ≥ 40.
Globally, 44% of diabetes, 23% of ischaemic heart disease and 7 - 41% of certain cancers are attributable to overweight and obesity.

Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you expend.

Factors that might affect your weight include
• Unhealthy diet and eating habits
• Genes and Family History.
• Inactivity
• Health Conditions such underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), Cushing's syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
• Medicines: these medicines include some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medicines.
• Pregnancy
• Age: As you get older, you tend to lose muscle, especially if you're less active. Muscle loss can slow down the rate at which your body burns calories.

Raised BMI is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as:
• Cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), which were the leading cause of death in 2012;
• Diabetes;
• Musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis - a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints);
• Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).

Your body can't gain weight unless you have a calorie surplus.

EAT HEALTHY. Limit energy intake from total fats and sugars; increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts.
EXERCISE REGULARLY. Engage in regular physical activity (60 minutes a day for children and 150 minutes per week for adults).
