Any confirmation that
this Lugardian contraption was far from a nation, came in form of the 2015
election result. The election result exposed the glaring distrust between the
ethnic regions, the North voting massively for their son and the East standing
behind their brother despite his obvious deficiencies.
One would have
expected that such odious revelation will spur leaders into taking bold steps
towards rallying a fractious nation. Any hopes that this would happen, was
punctured by Buhari's infamous gaffe that his policies would be guided by the
demographics of the election result....
So far, PMB's
appointments have left no one in doubt that he is implementing his notorious
97% vs 5% policy. While it has often been argued that Federal Character has
been a drawback to our nations progress, we also cannot discountenance the fact
the it is that Federal character that is still holding this nation together. No
region can lay claim to parading men of superior intellect or capable of
producing men of unquestionable integrity. So any argument that the the
appointments are based on merit, falls flat on its face, given that every
region can boast of capable hands if we are willing to search them out.
This lopsided
appointment is made worse coming after several weeks of a long wait. One would
have expected PMB to have taken his time to search out capable hands from all
parts of the Federation. No excuse is tenable to exonerate the obvious
marginalization of the Igbos in the appointments made so far. Democracy is
threatened when a people are punished for their choices.
As an ardent
supporter of the President, one is constrained to defend anomalies like this,
which tends to give fillip to the long held belief in some quarters that the
PMB is parochial and clannish. 'A man accused of theft should not seen cuddling
a goat'.
Let's hope that in
the coming appointments, PMB will not give people like Nnamdi Kanu more reason
to fight for Biafra knowing that in Nigeria, they are nothing more than
conquered second class citizens.
