There are indications
that a nominee for the office of the Minister of Petroleum & Natural Resources
may not be included in the ministerial nominee list to be sent to the Senate by
President Muhammadu Buhari this week. It will recalled that the President had
earlier told Nigerians that he would made known the members of his cabinet
latest September 2015, and from every human calculations, September 2015 ends
today.
So as the entire nation
keep vigil for President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial list, the President on
Tuesday said he would head the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. It was gathered
that Mr. Buhari revealed this in one of the interviews he granted one of the
foreign media in his hotel shortly before departing New York.
In his words:
“I will serve as the
Minister of Petroleum Resources myself,” Buhari told his interviewer.
The truth remains
that Nigeria’s petroleum sector has been said to be enmeshed in corruption with
millions of dollars said to be missing in the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation. Some analysts had earlier described it as an ‘opaque’.
This explains that
reason why Mr. President recently sacked and replaced the board and management
of the corporation shortly after assuming office on May, 29th.
The new management headed
by Mr. Ukachukwu has swung into action with a review of the firm’s activities and
a general reorganisation of the NNPC, with the President saying on Monday said
the trial of those who looted the NNPC would commence soon.
In a related analysis,
we also learnt that ministerial list that President Muhammadu Buhari will
likely submit to the Senate on Wednesday (today) may not contain all the
members of his proposed cabinet. Investigation by top correspondents (from
PUNCH) on Tuesday revealed that what would be transmitted to the Senate this
week would not be a complete list of nominees.
PUNCH also revealed
that a top government official familiar with the arrangement confided in one of
their correspondents that Buhari would send the names of the nominees to the
Senate in batches.
“What the Senate will
be getting on Tuesday or Wednesday will not be a complete list. The names will
be sent in batches but quite a number will be on this first list while others
will be compiled and sent later,” the source said.
The President may
have decided to send the names in batches in order to meet the September
deadline he set for himself rather than waiting to compile the full list and
fail to beat the deadline.
