Fellow Nigerians, I
felicitate with you on the occasion of our 55th independence anniversary.
I wish to pay tribute
to our founding fathers whose sacrifices and selfless efforts won us the
independence we now celebrate.
If we are to realize
the dreams of our forbears, we must imbibe the spirit they exhibited while
fighting for independence; unity of purpose, patriotism, community,
selflessness and an abiding faith in God.
Countries that rose
from humble beginnings to achieve greatness are not superior to us, they don't
have more talented people than us, some are even less endowed than us. However,
they knew when to stand together and agreed on what is right for their nation.
As long as we bicker
over trivial things, our progress will be slow. We must agree on what is right
and wrong. Wrong must not be defined differently when it involves our kinsmen.
We must agree that
massive corruption and development cannot occur together and most importantly,
we must be ready to sacrifice our own if need be, to rid our country of
corruption.
We must commit to
values that make positive change possible. Old habits that breed lawlessness,
impunity, strife, crisis and unrest must be discarded in this era of change.
Let us discharge our
duties with greater responsibility and consideration to our nation. Our
families owe the nation a duty to breed children with strong values. Our
religious bodies must preach the gospel of unity and honesty.
No nation has ever
achieved greatness on the strength of her leaders effort alone Through shared
responsibility, collective effort and strong resolve, we can turn the tide and
make Nigeria truly great.
In the words of
Obama, 'in the face of impossible odds, those who love this country can change
it'. Fellow Nigerians, we can change this nation together. The time to begin
was yesterday.
God bless the Federal
republic of Nigeria
