In an exclusive interview with Trendy Gist, former Miss Model Nigeria, and the current Face of Pulse TV Nigeria, Chiamaka Chinedu opens up on some ‘alleged’
dirty secrets in pageantry in Nigeria. The 22-year-old, (200 level) Animal and Environmental
Biology student of the prestigious University of Port Harcourt in a chat with
our Editorial Secretary Peace Okhomina
talks on how she emerged Miss Model Nigeria, her rise to stardom and why her
family didn’t support the idea of participating in pageantry at first.

Ø Tell us about yourself?
My name is Chiamaka Chinedu, a
student of the University of Port-Harcourt, department of Animal and
Environmental Biology, final year. I am 22 years old, I hail from Anambra
state, Awka precisely. I am currently the face of pulse TV Nigeria.
Ø How did you merge Miss Model Nigeria?
It was actually my second
pageant, I went there like every other girl; I followed the normal procedure, I
did the rehearsals and all, on the fateful day I won with the help of God
Ø Was it your first experience contesting in a
pageant? And what were the qualities that helped you win?
It was not my first pageant; they
needed someone who was fluent enough, someone who has courage and charisma. I
guess I was courageous enough that’s why I was given the crown.
Ø Why did you contest for Miss Model Nigeria?
I contested for Miss Model Nigeria
because they needed someone who could reach out to people with low self-esteem
and bring out the best in them, I wanted be part of it because I had that
problem earlier in 2012. So I
participated because I wanted to reach out to people.
Ø Are you currently running any project?
Although I have handed over my
miss model Nigeria crown, but during my reign, I visited a primary school at
obarela in Lagos state, where I gave scholarship to two pupils
Ø What’s your family’s take on your modeling,
before and after your pageant?
Well at first, they thought it
was about going nude on stage but I talked to them that it was not all about
that. They were like ok, but depending on the kind of things involved, that
when it involved bikini and other indecent dressing I shouldn’t be part of it,
for now they aren’t really against it, but as of when I started they were like
don’t do it. But after talking to them and telling them it’s what I like to do,
they had to support me all the way
Ø Who are your Role Models?
Wow! I have a lot. I am naturally
in love with tall people so if you taller and smarter than me you’re my role
model and also with other good qualities you posses. Well my mum is my first
role model, my second role model is Yvonne Nelson because she is tall and I
love her dress sense and finally my role model is Gabriella Union.
Ø Do you share the minority perspective that a
pageant beauty must sleep her way to get the crown?
In Nigeria that’s the
perspective, that’s the picture we get and most of the pageant organizers,
that’s what they push the Beauty Queens to do so, I can say 80% of the pageants
we do in Nigeria is like that, because honestly speaking I cannot call a Beauty
Queen and I am like how did you win? And they will tell me my dear may be I
paid o and so on. So, honestly speaking majority of the pageants done in
Nigeria, I don’t think it’s free and fair. The reminding 20 % work hard to earn
it.
Ø Most people say pageantry is always biased,
in your case what do you think?
My case was unbiased because
obviously from the camping I was 2nd.
And I work really hard for my stage performance. I guess that was what
increased my score, even when I was called up as the winner people were not
against it. So maybe in other pageants they have experienced, but in my case I
don’t think so.
Ø Your advice to upcoming models?
To just strive hard that’s it,
because they have to keep trying even when they are not there yet they should
still try. They will surly get there someday.
Go and sit down joor. Yours wasn't biased, but others were....shm! Chipenis or whateva u call yourself...can u tell us how u slept urself to the crown?
