A very insightful article by my
very good friend; public affairs analyst and prolific writer: Offor Honest
Read it after the cut…
When President Buhari called his
Vice, Prof. Osibande and referred to INEC as independent NIGERIA electoral
commission, he was just a candidate vying for a position. His unavoidable gaffe
was an embarrassment to his party. But when he referred to Chancellor Merkel as
President Mitchell of West Germany, he was speaking as our President, our
leader and our No. 1 representative.
It's OK to laugh, to call him
names and to criticize him for this embarrassing gaffe, especially if you're a
Jonathanian. Jonathan himself went through thorough bashing, some times in the
most uncharitable way. Even then, I maintained that Jonathan's failure is not
the failure of the Ijaw race or the PDP but the failure of a nation.
Am I asking you not lampoon old
Buhari for embarrassing himself, absolutely not. After all, GEJ got a cup full
of my own criticism. Truth is, Buhari did not just embarrass himself, he
embarrassed the whole nation. When you occupy such position as the leader of
the African continent, certain gaffes are unforgivable.
But my advise to those that are
eager to see old Buhari fail is that his failure (God forbid) will come with
consequences. Buhari will certainly make mistakes, I wasn't looking for a
perfect leader when I was casting my ballot. But his mistakes notwithstanding,
if Buhari will genuinely tackle corruption, stamp out insurgency and improve
the economy, I don't really care if I struggle to hear what he says.
The elections are over, the
struggle between GMB and GEJ e-warriors should also be called off. You can
point out errors genuinely with a view to correcting and not ridiculing the
President; that's what constructive criticism should be about. We're stuck we
the Daura General for the next four years, it's in our interest to not only
pray for his success but to also work for it.
2019 is four years away,
democracy has never been about elections and until we stop making our democracy
simply a struggle for power, we may never truly enjoy the dividends of
democracy.
Enjoy your day!
