I wanted to know exactly vintage fashion was all about and if it meant the same thing as Okirika aka bend down select aka pre loved. Writing about it now, I have a smile on my face just remembering how he got up from his seat to demonstrate how the vintage curators purchased their piece. I wish I can attach the video of this chat to this note (lol)…according to him, they usually would wear dark shades and walk briskly to were the sellers of these vintage clothes are looking from left to right to be sure there no human faces around; when they see that the coast is clear, they will quickly bend down and select the most unique items from the pile of clothes oozing of that customized okirika perfume.
Let’s face it guys;
there’s really no difference between okirika and vintage clothes. The only
difference I see is the fact that while vintage refers to strictly the fashion
and designs of old, okirika is a combination of both the fashion of the old and
some fairly used new generation pieces. The only thing that these two have in
common is the face that they both previously owned and used by someone known or
unknown but far as I’m concerned, okirika is the traditional name for vintage; I
stand to be corrected thought, but the truth is a large percentage of average Nigerians
have at some point in their lives rocked a piece from an okirika bail including
yours truly *wink*
For the sake of
effizy let’s stick with the ‘funkified’ name and call it vintage style, but you
and I know that real name. I don’t know if I’m a hard core fan of the vintage
inspired piece but sometimes these things come out looking extra stylish
especially when won by the those who know how. No kidding, never make the
mistake of looking down on them pieces until you see their price tags; I tell
you, some of these things are even more expensive than brand new clothes and
most people who rock this style are usually drawn to them by nostalgic feelings
and not because of lack of funds. The strong urge to try out a piece in time;
to experience what fashion was about between the early 20’s and 60’s. It’s all
about an adventure.
I feel that people
who try out these looks are totally eccentric and fearless. They have a lot of
self confidence and spontaneity to try anything.
